学科组整体的研究方向简介：成立于1978年，拥有占地2万平方米的白鱀豚馆科研基地，馆内饲养有长江江豚群体，设立生态学、声学和行为学、生理学以及分子生物学实验室。一直致力于白鱀豚、长江江豚、东亚江豚、中华白海豚、布氏鲸等国家重点保护鲸类物种的保护和研究工作。重点研究濒危动物的致危机理，种群动态监测理论和方法，小种群生物学和物种复壮理论，濒危动物繁殖理论和技术；重点解决小型鲸类的就地保护、自然迁地保护以及人工繁育的理论与实践问题。承担国家基金、国家重点研发专项子课题、长江江豚保护行动计划、国际合作等数十项课题。在Conservation Biology, Biological Conservation 等学术杂志上发表研究论文400余篇，先后获得国家科技进步奖、中科院科技进步奖、省科技进步奖等荣誉。
